Sanskriti's History

SANSKRITI is a cultural and charitable non-profit community organization launched in Milpitas, California on August 1, 1998. It started with a fund raising annual festival and Durga Puja celebration in its first year. Sanskriti has never looked back but has steadily kept on growing and expanding to include members from our diverse Indian subcontinent. Today, in addition to hosting a mega annual festival, it can boast of another pioneering effort – a one day Drama Festival (Natya Mela) in California which has been gaining momentum and wide acceptance from the patrons in and around the Bay Area and neighboring states.

Sanskriti has no annual membership fees and anyone can get involved, support and be a part of the ongoing activities and events. The only pre-requisite is motivation and commitment, which will help the organization achieve its mission and objectives. Our volunteers would also be a part of Sanskriti’s efforts to generate revenue through corporate sponsorships, donations (tax-deductible), advertisements for the magazine, and helping with the fund raising events.

Sanskriti prides itself in being an organization that welcomes everyone into its fold and believes in growing with the community and their support.

Mission
Sanskriti's Mission: Sanskriti is a non-for-profit 501 (C)(3) community organization serving the greater San Francisco Bay Area since 1998 and engaged in charitable, social, cultural and community development activities through donations and fund raising events with the benevolent support from its well wishers and patrons. Durga Puja
In the ancient times, after a long period of meditation, a demon named “Mahishasura” earned the favour of “Lord Shiva”.

Shiva was so pleased with the devotion of the demon that he blessed him with a boon that no man or Deity would be

able to kill him. Empowered with the boon, Mahishasura started his reign of terror over the World. People were killed mercilessly and even the Gods were driven out

from heaven. The Gods went to Shiva for relief and informed him about the atrocities caused by the demon. Shiva, who is normally unaware of the happenings in the material world, became very angry after hearing all this. This anger came out in the form of an energy from Shiva’s third eye and concentrated to form a woman. All the Gods who were present there contributed their share of energy to this Goddess and thus Durga, the eternal mother, was born. Riding a lion, she attacked Mahishasura. After a fierce battle, Durga transformed into Devi Chandika, the most ferocious form of the Goddess, and beheaded Mahishasura.

What Bengalis Believe

Uma, the only daughter of king “Daksha” and queen of Himalaya, “Menoka” started worshipping “Lord Shiva” from her very childhood as her “would be husband”. Shiva was so pleased with her worship that he offered to marry Uma. But There was a problem, Uma’s father Daksha disliked “Boundule” Shiva dressed with only a apeice of cloth made up of tiger-skin and ash all over the body. He strongly protested the marraige between Uma and Shiva. Though Uma forcefully got married to Shiva. But Daksha prevented her from going to Kailash with her husband. Then Daksha planned to insult Shiva. He invited everybody in a “yogga” called “Daksha Yogga” except his son-in-law Shiva. Then Uma was so shocked and hurt that she stopped eating and after fasting for so many days she died. After knowing all these things Shiva got mad with anger became furious, he went to Daksha’s abode. He lifted Uma’s body on his shoulders and started dancing madly called “Tandava Nritya”. The dance was so severe that the world was on the verge of destruction.

The God Narayana came forward to save the world from destruction. He cut Uma’s body into peices with his powerfull “Shudarshan Chakra”, the peices were scattered through out the country. The places where the peices had fallen known as “Shakti Pits”(energy pits). Some of such places are “Kalighat” in Calcutta, “Kamaksha” in Guahati etc. Shiva was finally appeased when the last peice fell off from his shoulders. Uma got a new life from Narayana and she went to the Kailash with Shiva. Daksha realised his mistake and appolosised to Shiva. Shiva forgave him finally. Since then, Durga with her four children and two “shokhi”(friends) Bijaya and Jaya used to visit her parents every year during the autumn(Sharatkal) when Durga puja is celebrated. Thus the other name of durga puja is “Sharodotshob”.

Utsav is a nonprofit, cultural organization involved in promoting Bengali culture in Sacramento valley. Utsav was founded in 2002, with one goal: creating a positive and enjoyable experience of friendship, happiness, and harmony via our Bengali heritage. Although Utsav is predominantly a Bengali organization so far, we want to reach other communities as well. Therefore, membership in Utsav is not limited to any particular race, religion or ethnic origin. In addition, it provides an opportunity for the children to learn about the ancient cultural tradition of India through various literary and other social and cultural events organized by Utsav.

Bengal is located in eastern part of India and has been the center of cultural, intellectual and religious figures for past severer decades. Bengali Heritage comprises its arts, language, literature, folk traditions, and philosophy of life and religion. Great authors and poets like Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, Tarashankar Banerjee, and Manik Banerjee have put Bengali language and literature on the world map.

Artists Jamini Roy, Nandalal Bose, and Abanindranath Tagore used their canvas to create portrait of peace and tranquility, of anguish and suffering and of love and hate that is Bengal. Udayshankar delighted millions by his frolicking dance sequences and Ravishankar by his ecstatic, transcendental melody and magic of sitar. Film directors Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, and Tapan Sinha depicted moving tales of Bengali hearts and souls and their meagre yet meaningful existence and way of life on the silver screen with all its glory and vibrant universal appeal to every people of the world.

Social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, and Maharshi Debendranath Tagore redefined our social mores. Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose led us in the field of science and B.C. Roy in medicine. C.R. Das sparked the spirit of Indian nationalism, and Netaji gave leadership in India's armed revolution against the might of the British empire. Philosophers and prophets such as Sri Ramkrishna, Swami Vivekananda, and Sri Aurobindo emancipated not only Bengal and India with their simple message of life and living, but illuminated the world at large.

Keeping our rich heritage in mind, Utsav is committed to promote our great culture, literature and values with today’s fast-paced environment. For the past eight years, Utsav has been celebrating three major events: Saraswati Puja, General Meeting/Annual Picnic and our biggest event Durga Puja. Every year, during Durga Puja and Saraswati Puja, we organize cultural programs performed by our local talents. Most our members and their children take part of the cultural program.

Charitable works, performed by Utsav members include Cooking a Meal for St. John's Shelter, Toys for Tots toy drive, KVIE Public Television Pledge Drive, and volunteer work at The Vedanta Society of Sacramento. Utsav also promotes Bengali education through its Bangla School and annual magazine called "Chowrongee".

PRIOR TO BAGC

by Girin and Gauri Roy

This article has attempted to provide an overview of our Bengalee community activities in the Greater Chicago area prior to the formation of BAGC and pass on this to our generation in the new millennium. This article is prepared in a very short time based on the memories of few old timers and may contain inaccurate information. However this should be viewed as a starting document and should be updated as more accurate input from the community becomes available.

As far as we know, the Bengalees started settling in Chicago area from early 1960's. There were only a handful of families and most of them were students. We arrived in Chicago on 19th of July 1969 and soon after we came across a few families and we all became good friends. In October 1969, a Bijoya Sanmelan was arranged in our one bedroom apartment at 6335 North Winthrop, Chicago. This was attended by several families, some of whom we met for the first time on that occasion. We still remember names of most of them: Prabir/Mira Acharya, Shanti/Mamata Bhattacharya, Subrata/Semanti Bhattacharya, Gurupada/Sashi Das, Surya/Tiki Misra, Mono /Pratima Mazumdar, Prabhas/Ila Nag, Satya/Hiru Pati, Girin/Gauri Roy, Sumit/Bithi Roy, Supriya/Shila Roy, Nikhil/Jayasree Sarkar, Pabitra/Maitreye Sarkar, Asoke/Gauri Sen. This Bijoya Sanmelan gave us
inspiration to organize more events like Saraswati Puja & Durga Puja in 1970.

Saraswati Puja in 1970 was held at Supriya Roy's apartment in Westmont. It was a one day event. All the known Bengalee families were invited by phone and about
60 people attended the Puja. Khichuri, Mixed vegetable, Beguni and Chatni were prepared in their small apartment and sweets came from individual homes. The program ended with a short cultural show.

Soon Durga Puja approached. A church at Hinsdale was arranged. Girin Roy made the Durga idol ( Durga, Singha, Ashur ) using clay and paper straws; Dipak Dutta brought all decoration items and Durga's astras from India; Supriya Roy organized an exhibition of Indian arts & crafts, and Pabitra Sarkar organized a hilarious drama. To our
knowledge this was the first large scale Durga Puja in North America in 1970. Several Bengalee families from the neighboring states also visited Chicago on that occasion. We used to arrange host families for the outside guests who planned to stay overnight in Chicago.

The tradition of Durga Puja and Saraswati Puja continued thereafter every year organized by the Bengalee families in Chicago without a formalized BAGC. Rabindra/Nazrul
Jayanti and picnic for Bengalees were added to our events. Mono Mazumdar reconditioned the clay Durga idol for 1971 puja. In subsequent years Ajoy Das made both Durga and
Saraswati using molded paper. Subrata Mukherjee made a Saraswati Murti using Plaster-of-Paris and a full size Durga by painting in 1974 & 1977 respectively.

First Bengalee Magazine " BIDESH" was published in 1974 under the editorship of Subrata Mukherjee and Jahar Nandi. Ajoy Das was the architect of our logo for the magazine which is still used for "Samaj Sangbad".

In 1975, a Bengalee library was formed utilizing books from the individual families and discarded books from the University of Chicago. The library centers were located geographically on North, South and West suburbs of Chicago to serve the community better.

With a growing number of Bengalee families in the Greater Chicago area the need for a formal Committee was felt by many and a constructive discussion took place during a weekend party at Bankim Saha's house in 1976. Amongst those present in that party were Dipak Datta, Bankim Saha, Sukomal Talukdar, Mahitosh Mukherjee, Swapan Banerjee etc. Subsequently a formal meeting was held at a Bensonville club house in 1976. This meeting was attended by most of the Bengalee families in Greater Chicago to discuss " FORMAL" versus " INFORMAL" Bengalee Committee. The majority voted in favor of "FORMAL" Bengalee Committee. Sumit Roy was requested to coordinate the preparation of the BAGC constitution and the BAGC was formed by end of 1976. Sukomal Talukdar was selected the first BAGC President in 1977.

We all feel that BAGC has a very strong bond and is very unique from other communities and will continue the services in an exemplary manner. Long live this spirit through the new millennium.
